>> o2 broadband to launch after Be purchase
One of the UK's leading mobile phone operators o2 has followed in competitors' footsteps by announcing plans to offer broadband as part of their phone packages. To this end o2 have acquired broadband provider Be for £50m, as the UK broadband and mobile markets continue to converge.
In a statement on 2 August 2006, o2 said: "With Be, o2 broadband immediately acquires the most up-to-date broadband capability in the UK and a platform for developing future converged services that integrate mobile and the Internet.”
Be is among the UK's most advanced internet technology groups, whose mission statement is "to provide you with the best Internet service, with the best products, at the best possible price" and have been taking the UK broadband world by storm as they became one of the first companies to offer up to 24meg downloads for home users along with unmetered access.
o2 broadband will also be taking over Be broadband's own national broadband network giving o2 broadband capability in the UK and a platform for developing converged services that integrate mobile, fixed-line and internet. o2 broadband currently has 150 local exchanges in its UK network and has plans to extend this to more than 400 local exchanges by the end of the year, covering around 50% of the UK population by the end of 2006. o2 broadband plans to add to that and aims to reach 70% of the population by the end of 2007.
With all the big players looking to offer customers a ‘quad’ play’ of landline phone, TV, Internet and mobile services, o2 broadband are sure to be right at the front of that market. o2 broadband have already gained valuable experience of succesfully bundling mobile and broadband services in Germany, the Czech Republic and the Isle of Man.
Here at Broadband Deals we await to see what packages o2 broadband will offer to the market - but with the established network infrastructure of 'Be' joined with the financial clout of o2 - we're pretty sure you're going to want to 'Bethere'
